Architectural design elements target factors like structure, design, texture, value, strength, stability, and formality. The five most important elements in architectural designing are the building blocks in construction, they should be taken under consideration. An architect is generally in charge of designing, where he works with elements and space.
The basic principles in architectural design are harmony/ unity, balance, rhythm, hierarchy, scale, proportion, movement, emphasis/ dominance, similarity, and contrast. These are the most fundamental ideas to practice design.
Architectural Design Principles:
Balance: in interior design states that objects need to be carefully placed within a given space. Balance can be either formal or symmetrical creating a mirror effect. It can also be informal or asymmetrical distributing its weight on either side.
Giving a very relaxed and casual feel to that area.
An object’s color, size, texture, or weight can change the visual balance weight.
Repetition and rhythm: repetition of color, line, texture, or form creates a rhythm to one’s eye. As your eyes move along the design from one end to other, shapes and patterns move in sync with it. When you see rhythm it pleases your eye making you wonder from where it starts and where does it end. As you move along the well-built choreography of the structure. All this creates repetition in visual links within a given space.
Emphasis: is the focal point of attention. It can be anything that adds character or just brings the eye back to that point every time it wanders creating an everlasting impression. Without emphasis, the entire structure would look monotonous. A single focal point or for instance two focal areas can create a great extent of the drama required.
Scale and proportion: correlate to each other, it depends on the size and their relation between objects. Sometimes things might not be proportionate, but in fact, have a balance to the scale of the object.
For instance, a number of pictures or paintings varying in shapes and sizes placed on an empty wall will have a greater impact. instead of having a single painting on it.
Making pieces relate to one another has a lot to do with space around them.
Harmony: is the end result of all design principles and elements correlating and working together to enhance the beauty as well as visual appearance. All design principles in space bring elements into a functional relationship with the physical aspects of light, space, and structure.
Other Design Elements:
Architectural design elements comprise of seven unique details and components. When put together form the structure, style, and foundations of buildings. Basic elements in architectural design are color, texture, value, line, point, and shape.
- Lines can be horizontal, vertical, curved, and diagonal. Each type of line representing a different kind of expression.
- Colors that are warm or cool in tones and hues.
- Form and shape can either be 2D shapes or 3D shapes.
- Space, that could be open, cramped, or unused.
- Texture ranging from smooth or rough.
